Sustainability

Wall insulation

More than a quarter of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions comes from the energy we use to heat, light and run our homes, while a further 19% is generated by non-residential buildings. There is a clear need for urgent action to reduce this environmental impact by making our homes and buildings as energy efficient as possible.

The Code for Sustainable Homes is driving a stepchange in sustainable building practice for the UK, bringing huge challenges for the construction industry to achieve zero carbon for new homes by 2016. Combined with ambitious Government targets to achieve zero carbon for all new buildings by 2019, it is essential that our industry pulls together to make these goals a reality. Saint-Gobain is working with many leading industry partners, including the UK Green Building Council and a number of research and academic bodies, to identify environmentally sustainable solutions that also deliver positive social and economic effects. And our commitment to sustainable product development is backed by our investment in helping to develop the skills and knowledge required to implement these solutions through training initiatives such as the prestigious British Gypsum Drywall Academy.

We are also focused on the urgent need to refurbish existing buildings, the majority of which will still be standing by 2050. Saint-Gobain companies are involved in many of the regeneration and redevelopment schemes and large scale public sector projects that are making a difference to communities across the UK.
