Best practice approach to responsible sourcing

Respobsible sourcing

Within British Gypsum, there has been a long running program of work to understand the supply chain, and the social, economic, and environmental impacts of both the business and its suppliers.

In 2007, a detailed questionnaire was sent to its top 100 suppliers covered topics ranging from policies, external accreditations and carbon impact to travel to work schemes.

Suppliers were scored and categorized into bands, with a requirement for all suppliers to achieve a rating of C or above.

For the companies that did not achieve C status, an agreed programme of improvement was established with the supplier.

In 2010, a second Supplier Corporate Responsibility Questionnaire has been used to benchmark the progress of the supply base during the interim three years since the programme was launched. The survey has also been expanded to include other businesses in the Construction Products sector including PAM, Artex and Isover.

The 2010 results will help our Construction Products Sector to develop objectives and targets for its Responsible Sourcing Strategy over the next two years, to include increasing the number of compliant suppliers (>C rating) beyond the 2010 benchmark of 95.2%. We are also working to extend this approach across more of our companies and brands.

Areas for future focus in our strategy are:

• Continue to conduct supplier Safety and Environmental Management Audits

• Raise the number of compliant suppliers (>C rating) above the 2010 benchmark of 95.2 %

• Monitor our strategic suppliers safety performance statistics

• Introduce material stewardship aspects from the BES 6001 BRE standard
