Sustainability

Methodology

Our sustainability report has been written with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 guidelines, although it has not been assessed by an external party against them.

Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland has been working with a third-party organisation, IMS Consulting, to help us engage with stakeholders and to better understand the approach of Saint-Gobain in the UK and Ireland towards sustainability in relation to peer companies. This work has helped influence the 2010 report, and will to contribute towards ongoing discussions about Saint-Gobain’s approach to sustainable development in the UK and Ireland.

We wanted to help Saint-Gobain’s stakeholders better understand how we are approaching sustainable development, to illustrate how we are working towards sustainability objectives, and to highlight examples of good practice in the UK and Ireland.

We have a wide range of stakeholders in the UK and Ireland, and are committed to engaging with them on a regular basis. It is important that we understand and learn from stakeholders’ needs and concerns, so that we can be responsive to them and provide the goods and services that meet legislative requirements and marketplace demand.

During 2010, Saint-Gobain in the UK and Ireland undertook a survey of its stakeholders to find out their opinions on sustainability issues. Employees and some external stakeholders participated in a comprehensive online survey that provided us with a detailed snapshot of stakeholders’ views and attitudes about our approach to sustainable development in the UK and Ireland.

We also undertook face-to-face interviews with some of our customers, and asked a sample of architects and contractors about what they look for when they are choosing a supplier of construction materials. Both of these surveys helped us understand the requirements and priorities of our customers.

The opinions gathered from internal and external stakeholders have also fed into a wider and ongoing evaluation of the way in which sustainable development is approached and reported by Saint-Gobain in the UK and Ireland, and will continue to do so on an ongoing basis.

The report will also provide further examples of good practice, initiatives and achievements from across our three Sectors.
