Sustainability
Our approach
In the UK and Ireland, we approach sustainable development in line with the Group’s global strategy, but tailored to local requirements and circumstances. We have chosen to adopt the three pillars framework for sustainable development; Planet/Environment, Profit/Economic and People/Social.
This approach provides a simple yet robust context for understanding what sustainable development means to Saint-Gobain and its companies and brands in the UK, Ireland and South Africa. Successful sustainable development requires an integrated approach and we recognise that, in practice, these pillars inevitably overlap and cannot be considered independently of each other.
Within the UK and Ireland, a sustainable development steering group was formed during 2010, led by Peter Hindle MBE, General Delegate for the UK and Ireland.
The steering group is tasked with leading our sustainable development strategy for the UK and Ireland. It ensures that a co-ordinated approach is adopted by businesses in the region, that supports Group-level aims and objectives but which is tailored to the requirements of ‘local’ stakeholders and markets.
The steering group is supported by three cross-business working groups that focus on the three pillars of sustainable development; people, planet and profit. The working groups are comprised of representatives from across our businesses, and focus on the development and implementation of specific initiatives which support the achievement of our aims in each pillar.
