Our CSR Strategy

Our CSR Strategy

Saint-Gobain is the world leader in sustainable building solutions and high-performance materials. For the past 350 years, our products and systems have been used to enhance human habitats and daily life. CSR is integral to our long-term business success.

Our CSR approach is built on our Group values and Principles of Conduct and Action. It is influenced by global challenges as well as stakeholder engagement in the UK and Ireland. We deliver sustainable solutions by focusing on four strategic commitments.

FOUR CSR COMMITMENTS
ALL 4 CORNERS OF THE WORLD.
01

COMMITMENT

CHANGING HOW WE BUILD

Saint-Gobain’s aim is to become the reference for sustainable habitat by advocating sustainable construction and developing innovative solutions for buildings with multiple benefits that don’t cost the earth to build, run or maintain.

THE REFERENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE HABITAT

Being seen as an exemplary leader and ambassador for sustainable construction in the UK and Ireland is a key objective. We do this by tangibly demonstrating the possibilities of designing, constructing and renovating MultiComfort buildings using our innovative materials and solutions.

Our eco-innovation policy, practices and solutions take into account the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability. We are passionate about materials and actively contribute to a resource-efficient future by openly sharing information about the environmental impacts of our products over their entire life cycle.

As technologies and regulations change, we see it as our corporate responsibility to keep our customers and the trade up to date, providing the latest knowledge and practical skills training in sustainable building construction.

02

COMMITMENT

CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WE OPERATE IN

Saint-Gobain is committed to the long-term growth of our business, while protecting the environment from potential impacts across our manufacturing, distribution and corporate functions.

We have five main areas of focus: raw materials and waste; energy, atmospheric emissions and climate impact; water use and discharge; biodiversity and zero environmental accidents.

The Group is committed to best practice environmental management systems and requires all concerned sites – the company’s term for large manufacturing sites – to achieve the ISO 14001 standard. In the UK and Ireland, we aim to exceed this target and implement ISO 14001 across all our sites by the end of 2016.

The translation of Group objectives into local policies and targets is carried out by a network of environmental working groups made up of representatives from across our Delegation’s businesses and support functions. These include the Responsible Sourcing Committee; Energy Reduction Group and Biodiversity Group. They initiate various programmes in support of the goals and are responsible for measuring and reporting progress.

03

COMMITMENT

SUPPORTING AND DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE

In 2012, the Group launched the Our People in an Empowering Network (OPEN) Human Resources policy.

A DIVERSE & TALENTED WORKFORCE

It is based on four main priorities: employee engagement, team diversity, professional mobility and talent development. Saint-Gobain has been recognised as a Top Employer at various locations worldwide, including the UK and as a Global Top Employer.

Our objective is to be a reference company in terms of health, safety and wellbeing, with a long-term goal of zero workplace accidents and zero occupational diseases. We promote diversity in all its forms, including gender, age, nationality, education and disability.

We offer tailored and progressive career paths and make mobility in terms of geography, position and activity a priority. We support the continuing professional development (CPD) of individuals and teams at specific sites or businesses, or spanning several of our brands. We offer various types of training, including face-to-face and e-learning. We are moving towards blended programmes, where employees are encouraged to take ownership of their development and pull out the resources they need.

04

COMMITMENT

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITIES' DEVELOPMENT

Wherever it is present, Saint-Gobain is committed to being a major and long-term contributor to local economic development based on the key values of respect for local communities and ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders.

CREATING SHARED SOCIO-ECONOMIC VALUE

We aim to create shared value by taking positive action across our value chain, from our commitment to responsible procurement through to our Entrepreneurship Foundation helping construction SMEs grow their businesses and the sector. By doing business with local suppliers and supporting the development of enterprise, Saint-Gobain indirectly creates jobs and wealth for reinvestment by employees.

In 2015, Saint-Gobain celebrated its 350th anniversary. As we look to build on that success in generations to come, we are committed to working with local schools and colleges to raise awareness of sustainable manufacturing and construction; help students prepare for the world of work; and to attract future talent to our sector and businesses.

We support charities and good causes at all levels, from major corporate funding via the Saint-Gobain Initiatives Foundation and Together Partnership down to sponsored events by teams of colleagues and individuals.
