Saint-Gobain UK hosted its annual Driver of the Year finals, a competition that recognised and rewarded the invaluable contribution from Saint-Gobain drivers and support teams to deliver a safe and sustainable transport network.

Sponsored by MAN Truck & Bus UK and held on Tuesday 14 October at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) testing facility in Warwickshire, the competition awarded the best and most-improved drivers from the six Saint-Gobain brands involved in the 2014 Driver Development Programme  – British Gypsum, Formula, Isover, Artex, Gibbs & Dandy and Minster. The event was also supported by contributing sponsors Michelin, Don-Bur, Trak M8 and CVL

The Saint-Gobain transport fleet is one of the largest in the country. Safety of drivers and, as a consequence, the wider public is therefore crucial. The Driver Development Programme reflects Saint-Gobain’s commitment to safety and driver performance.  The finals competition is the culmination of months of hard work, not just from the drivers, but from the teams behind them who have been delivering high-quality development for the drivers on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to improve overall levels of safety, service and performance on the road.

The 18 qualifying finalists were assessed on either a telemetry reporting programme or a manual process – both of which included one-to-one development sessions with the employees. The competition saw drivers putting a range of skills to the test, including manoeuvring and braking on different surfaces specially designed to simulate weather conditions such as rain and ice.

Guests who attended the event also had the chance to participate in activities such as driving a HGV articulated truck and demonstrating the much-talked-about HGV blind spots.

Andy Mason from British Gypsum was crowned the Saint-Gobain Driver of the Year winner. He said: “This is the second year I’ve been selected as a finalist and I’m gobsmacked that I’ve won given the calibre of drivers I’ve been up against.

“I’ve really enjoyed every aspect of the competition and today’s event. It’s been a well organised day and has been great fun to spend it around my colleagues.”

Richard Batley, Human Resources Director for Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland, said: “The Saint-Gobain UK Driver of the Year competition is an opportunity for us to recognise the critical role that our drivers play in fulfilling our promise to our customers and why on-going driver development is essential. The Driver Development Programme has generated a high level of engagement and commitment from our employees and suppliers, since it launched in 2013, and work will shortly begin on the 2015 programme.

“Congratulations to all 18 qualifying drivers for making it to the final, an achievement in itself, and to the overall winner, Andy Mason.”

Ian McLean from MAN said: “We are proud to be a sponsor of the Driver of the Year Competition. As one of Europe’s leading truck manufacturers, driver safety is a top priority for us. To have the opportunity to work closely with Saint-Gobain to promote these safety features was a crucial factor in our sponsorship.”
