London-based Priority Plumbing, a Saint-Gobain business, was so impressed with a candidate after meeting at a School of Hard Knocks job fair that it has employed him on a full-time contract.

Following its partnership with School of Hard Knocks, a charity which helps people improve their confidence and employability through sport and mentoring, Priority Plumbing was introduced to Ambesajr Teklezion.

Formally a videographer, Ambesajr found himself unemployed and turned to the School of Hard Knocks for support. Primarily using sport to build teamwork and confidence, School of Hard Knocks, together with Investec, held a job fair to bring together its business partners and students.

The Priority Plumbing team were originally looking for a part-time employee, but were so impressed with Ambesajr, that they took him on full-time as a Keyholder (supervisor) at its Stratford branch.

Ambesajr Teklezion said: “I was introduced to the School of Hard Knocks at the job centre, and the programme seemed too good to be true. The skills I’ve learned, including interview practice, have been invaluable and I quickly saw my confidence grow.

“I wanted a career change, and with a keen interest in DIY and experience in sales, I knew Priority Plumbing would be great for me. I originally applied for a sales position but I was given a supervisor’s role, which has given me a huge confidence boost – I’m excited to become part of the team and take on new responsibilities.”

Angela Thompson, HR Coordinator for Priority Plumbing, said: “We have always preferred working with job centres and employing from within the local communities of our branches, so the School of Hard Knocks partnership is a perfect fit for us and is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to be a responsible business.

“This is the first time we’ve worked with the School of Hard Knocks and we’re astounded by the result of just one job fair – everyone at the fair came across so well and had a real interest in what we did. We’re sure that this partnership will continue to thrive and result in more appointments in the future.”

The School of Hard Knocks returns to Sky Sports in August.
