Autumn Statement housebuilding and R&D boost welcomed

Mike Chaldecott, General Delegate and Regional CEO for Construction Products at Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland commenting on this week's Autumn Statement said:

"We are pleased to see the government announcing measures to address housing supply issues including: a £2.3 billion housing infrastructure fund for up to 100,000 new homes in areas of high demand, and £1.4 billion for 40,000 additional affordable homes".

"This is a good boost to housebuilding, but doesn’t answer some of the important needs in the sector as to how we enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. Including, how buildings’ fabric can be enhanced to improve comfort, health and wellbeing, as well as reduce environmental impact".

"To meet the current housing shortage, the construction industry must also improve capacity, productivity and innovation. This sentiment was reflected throughout the Autumn Statement, with a proposed £2 billion R&D spend between now and 2021 and a further £23 billion National Productivity Investment Fund – both of which are very positive moves that we welcome at Saint-Gobain UK. Investment in, and a gradual shift towards, off-site manufacturing and smart methods of construction will help the industry to meet government targets, as well as improving whole life costs for homeowners. These are important steps are subjects that Saint-Gobain strongly supports and we are committed to continuing to play our part in leading work in this area through Chairing the Innovation Workstream of the Government’s Construction Leadership Council".
