The project involved the construction of 2 low energy homes, designed to demonstrate the viability of masonryconstruction techniques for affordable, mass-market homes meeting the highest level 6 Code for Sustainable Homesstandard. The pair of 3 bed semi-detached homes were designed to meet two different standards. One at Code Level 4to concentrate on maximising the low energy performance of the building fabric, and the second to include additionalheat recovery and micro generation technologies to achieve the optimum Code level 6.


The challenge for Saint-Gobain was to provide insulation andair-tightness solutions for the thermal envelope and separatingstructure to minimise heat loss and emissions while maximisingthe thermal mass contribution of the masonry construction.The solutions had to encapsulate current industry best practiceand utilise readily available, tried and tested products and systemsthat could be implemented at a competitive cost.

Saint-Gobain Solutions:

  • Weber

    Weber – weber.therm XP external wall insulation system lined the 215mm solid block external wall of the Code 6 house.

  • Saint-Gobain Isover

    Isover – The masonry cavity separating wall was fully filled with Isover 100mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll to eliminate the party wall thermal bypass and provide acoustic performance.

  • British Gypsum

    British Gypsum - Two coat gypsum plaster system using Thistle Hardwall and Thistle Multi-Finish was applied as the internal finish of the Code 6 house to reduce air leakage.

    In the Code 4 house, walls were first sealed with 8mm Gyproc SoundCoat PLUS.

    NB: To seal air paths in the blockwork before an internal finish of 12.5mm Gyproc Soundbloc Acoustic Plasterboard. To complete the thermal specification precast hollow core floor slabs were lined to the underside with Thistle Durafinish to maximise their inherent thermal mass and the south-facing asymmetric pitch roof was insulated internally with 65mm Gyproc Thermaline SUPER.
