Overview

One of the largest and most complex campus developments in recent years, York University’s multi-million pound Heslington East project saw the construction of a diverse range of building types and designs, all with demanding acoustic requirements.

Contractors BAM were tasked with constructing buildings to house new Departments of Theatre, Film and Television, Computer Science, Yorkshire Management School and York Law School. A new ‘HUB’ building was built to deliver training and support for the creative technology industries and to host research groups, and the ‘Catalyst Building’ was created as an incubation unit to support young businesses in the creative, digital and media sectors.

Challenge

A challenging mix of construction techniques were used including timber, steel and concrete frame to deliver the complexity and range of facilities that were required. Isover were instrumental in providing an insulation solution that would boost both acoustic performance and be suitable for use on the lightweight steel frame. To deliver the demanding partition and acoustic requirements for all areas, Saint-Gobain systems were used that could guarantee an acoustic performance of up to 52dB.
