Steps towards sustainability

A growing number of our products and services contribute directly to a more sustainable way of life. For example, we can offer the most effective solutions for water management, air filtration and solid waste recovery, as well as technology for the production of clean energy.

Saint-Gobain Pipelines’ ductile and cast iron products are 100% recyclable when they come to the end of their useful life. And Saint-Gobain Glass UK has developed a scheme whereby customers send waste glass back to the factory – all 2000 tonnes of it a month, which is recycled into new glass.

British Gypsum has set up a recycling scheme with 50 major housebuilders which sees more than 14,000 sacks of plasterboard returned to the company each month. It is also one of the first construction product manufacturers to sign up to the Government’s zero carbon strategy, as a founding signatory of the ‘2016 Commitment’, published in August 2007.

Saint-Gobain is also investing heavily, not only to develop more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly products, but also to ensure the sustainability of our own operations. Many of our companies operate industry-leading recycling schemes, and our long-term aim is zero-non-recovered waste from our manufacturing processes.

Additionally, as the UK's largest distributor of timber we are a member of the WWF-UK Forest and Trade Network UK Buyers Group, and we provide customers with access to Chain of Custody certified timber at over 170 branches.
