SUPPORTING AND DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE

Caring for our people, their safety, health and well-being helps us make the world a better home for our colleagues and their families

Every colleague makes a contribution to their success. Each of our colleagues have a responsibility everyday to keep each other safe and well and always speak up if they see anything unsafe. But our success is deeply intertwined with their own health, wellbeing and happiness and we want to support and develop our colleagues so that they can contribute to their best ability.

TOP STORIES ON OUR ACTIONS:

REDUCING ACCIDENTS - KEEPING COLLEAGUES SAFE

Over the long term, we have made considerable progress in reducing accidents in our business. This progress shows our business is becoming safer. Since 2010 our lost time indicator [TF1] was double our current rate and our total recordable incident rate [TF2] is now five times lower now than in 2010.

These improvements have come about by the gradual instilling of a safety culture - where safety is number one. We encourage colleagues to talk about safety everyday and raise anything that could be done differently, safer.

IT'S OK TO NOT BE OK

In 2017 we ran two pilots of a new learning and development programme based on ‘It’s ok to not be ok’.

The aim of the programme was to focus on mental health awareness for managers. The development programme, which was held with two groups of 30 Managing Directors and Operational Managers across our businesses, was designed to help them identify signs of colleagues who may be suffering from mental health issues. To prepare them for sympathetic conversations about mental health issues and to ensure they are confident in signposting colleagues to the support and services available to help them.

We're now rolling the programme out to more and more colleagues.

HELPING IMPROVE COLLEAGUES HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Our Fit4Life/ Fit4Work health gateway for employees developed in partnership with AXA, provides a valuable resource for our colleagues to improve their health and wellbeing and assess the key health risks they may face.

The 'heath age' calculator helps colleagues to find out ways in which they can improve their 'health age' through simple changes. Since we launched the gateway more than 10,000 self-declarations have been performed and through continued awareness on healthy lifestyles  many key risks for colleagues - Physiological risks, Alcohol Consumption and diet have been reduced.

TEAM CHALLENGES TO IMPROVE WELLBEING

We encourage colleagues to play an active part in local communities and develop sense of team.

The Weber management team underwent a programme of team development focused on health and wellbeing – as part of our Fit2Lead programme. The impact of this programme was the roll-out of a health and wellbeing programme in Weber – with the aim of encouraging colleagues to assess their health age and, ultimately adopt healthier lifestyles. By the end of the year, colleagues in the Weber business had reduced their health age by a collective of 146 years! The winner of the health age competition, Emma, reduced her health age by 13 years. Other colleagues Mark and Louise reduced theirs by 12 years each and a colleague, Katy, discovered an undiagnosed heart condition as a result of her voluntary assessment.
