We must deliver change and remove barriers to the use of offsite manufacturing in the residential sector - that was the core message from Jade Lewis, Saint-Gobain’s Director of Advocacy, at this year’s Offsite Construction Show.
The two-day event, now in its fifth year, took place in ExCeL London and welcomed over 2,000 building, construction, design and engineering professionals.
Jade, who works closely with the industry and government to help inform the policymaking process, described the role of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and how it plays a part in delivering radical change. She presented with Fergus Harradence, Deputy Director, Construction, BEIS who gave an overview of the Construction Sector Deal, which outlines the partnership between government and industry that aims to transform the sector’s productivity through innovative technologies.
The CLC has been instrumental in securing the first ever sector deal and largest amount of government funding ever awarded to the construction sector, and now wants to create a united voice for construction by collaborating with key industry organisations.
Jade said: “The CLC works with industry and government to identify and deliver actions supporting UK construction in building greater efficiency, skills and growth. It is leading on the delivery of the Construction Sector Deal and maintaining progress towards the Construction 2025 strategy goals.
“I was delighted to present on behalf of the CLC’s Innovation in Buildings Workstream. I support Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland’s Chief Executive, Mike Chaldecott in the leadership of this group, which brings together over 100 industry, academic and government representatives to deliver a collaborative plan of action to deliver real increase in smart construction.”
The CLC defines smart construction as “building design, construction and operation that makes full use of digital technologies and industrialised manufacturing techniques to improve productivity, minimise whole life cost, improve sustainability and maximise user benefits”.
Jade, who has more than 20 years’ experience working in various roles in the construction product sector, added: “We have a vision in Saint-Gobain to create great living spaces and improve daily lives. As part of the CLC we have been leading this change, working together to remove barriers to innovation and increase productivity - focusing on the housing sector and schools.
“We believe that innovation and smart construction will help the industry increase productivity and capacity, allowing more buildings to be built. In addition, we believe it will improve the quality and performance of buildings in important areas such as energy efficiency and building comfort.”
