Staff at Saint-Gobain Weber are happier and healthier than ever, thanks to an innovative health and wellbeing programme.

Now, that programme has won them a spot as finalists in the Best Healthcare and Wellbeing Benefits – Small Employer category at this year’s Employee Benefit Awards.

The accolade recognises the most effective healthcare and wellbeing strategies implemented by an organisation with fewer than 1,000 employees.

Sally Rao, HR Director for Saint-Gobain Weber, explained: “We have created innovative activities and approaches to ensure a healthier and happier workforce who are engaged, committed, productive and will therefore drive business growth and success.

“Rather than filtering down initiatives from management we gathered feedback from wellbeing champions across our sites so they could tell us what our staff wanted when it came to their own health and wellbeing.

As well as introducing these new initiatives for colleagues, Saint-Gobain Weber’s senior managers participated in the Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland Fit 2 Lead programme which empowers leaders to embrace the wellbeing culture and to track their own personal health and wellbeing journey. This culture of wellbeing has encouraged approximately 200 staff members at Saint-Gobain Weber to get involved and feel the benefits of the wellbeing programme since 2015.

Health checks, sleep clinics, relaxation rooms, walking meetings, free fruit and healthier options in canteens are just some of the many initiatives in place to support staff at their manufacturing sites in Telford, Flitwick and Ballyclare, Northern Ireland.

Since the scheme launched, Sally says employee engagement has increased by 13 per cent.

As well as improving health, she believes that the programme has helped staff to become more effective at their jobs.

She added: “The figures speak for themselves. Since launching our wellbeing programme, we’ve also seen an increase in customer satisfaction by more than five per cent. Staff are happier and this reflects in the way they develop relationships with their customers and their colleagues.”

Saint-Gobain employs more than 17,000 staff in the UK and Ireland across its manufacturing sites, retail outlets, offices and distribution network. All employees have access to the AXA Health Gateway tool where they can find tips and advice for a healthier lifestyle as well as a Health Age Calculator to track their progress.

Sally ended: “It’s an honour to be recognised for innovation. We constantly strive to do things differently and we have to thank our staff for their incredible efforts.”

This is the second year running that Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland have been shortlisted in the Employee Benefit Awards. This year, the winning employers will be announced on Friday 7 June during an awards event at the Tower of London, hosted by actress and comedian Kerry Godliman.
