Record numbers graduate from Saint-Gobain and Barnardo’s YouthBuild Academy

Saint-Gobain, Barnardo’s and YouthBuild's partnership Academy in Lewisham, South London, has supported a record number of young people into positive destinations, with 65% finding work, training or further study opportunities and 17 young people graduating from this cohort.

It has been a challenging year for many and particularly for young people, with youth long-term unemployment hitting a five-year high and worsening mental health amongst this demographic. The YouthBuild Academy, a joint venture between Saint-Gobain, Barnardo’s and YouthBuild Ventures UK, delivers a 16 week construction skills based course for 16yrs – 29yrs who are not in education or employment. This course is designed to provide them with the capabilities to progress into the construction industry, which itself is facing a skills shortage.

Richard Batley, HR and CSR Director, Saint-Gobain, said:

Despite the challenges brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic we are incredibly proud of the results that have been achieved during this period. Looking forward, we are developing the offering to provide different opportunities, including a 30-hour work placement and bootcamp. Saint-Gobain are committed to supporting care leavers both through the Academy and the Gap Homes, creating both the professional environment to enable them to succeed.
