Sands Leisure Centre

Introduction:

This is part of the Sands Leisure Centre rehabilitation project, which will cost £27 million in cooperation with Carlisle City Council. The renovated center contains a new gym for local people as well as an 8-lane, 25-meter swimming pool. The four-lane 20m pool has a movable floor, which houses the Better Swim School and holds the famous Water Workout exercise programs.

Problem:

Gordon France, MGL Group Site Manager, explains why Leca LWA was chosen for this project: Leca was chosen for this project largely owing to its delivery technique on a very restricted region of the project, which was to fill the exterior of the pool walls, saving possibly 10+ days on schedule and having the added advantage of boosting the thermal values of the pool tank.

Solution:

Leca LWA, a lightweight aggregate fill material with a novel pneumatic distribution system, was used for the Sands Swimming Pool development. According to MGL Group Site Manager Gordon France, Leca LWA was easy to level and compact, and had the structural strength to support a 150mm thick concrete floor slab.

We care about building better.

Client's Words:

“On the right project I would not hesitate to consider using Leca whether it was structural, loading requirements due to its lightweight properties or as a need to improve programme and bring forward the overall completion date of the project.”
