Innovative Construction Practices: Exploring British Gypsum's Range of Speciality Plasterboards
Innovation in construction materials is not only beneficial — it's essential for advancing building efficiency, sustainability and functionality in today's demanding market. At British Gypsum, we’re building on our decades of experience to address modern building challenges and set the new standard of plasterboards with our range of speciality boards.
The Critical Role of Innovation in Modern Construction
The landscape of construction in the UK is changing rapidly, due to several factors including tightening regulations and heightened demand for features such as enhanced fire safety and noise reduction. With such rapid change comes unique challenges that the industry must tackle through innovation in both practices and products.
These evolving requirements have catalysed the development of speciality plasterboards that are designed to help enhance construction by delivering superior results to their traditional counterparts.
British Gypsum: A Legacy of Construction Innovation
Since launching in 1917, British Gypsum has operated with an ethos of helping the construction industry to build better. We understand that by supplying the industry with innovative products and practices, we can help to create spaces where people thrive — environments designed for optimal working, living and recreation.
Our innovation journey includes several industry milestones:
In 1989, British Gypsum was the first in the industry to begin offering next-day delivery, giving our partners the ability to finish products at a faster pace, rapidly changing the built environment.
In 2001, British Gypsum began a Plasterboard Waste Recycling Service (PRS), introducing sustainability-focused practices and ensuring a reduction in waste.
In 2005, work began on new state-of-the-art plants at Sherburn and East Leake, which were opened in 2007. The following year, we became the first gypsum manufacturer to gain ISO 14001 certification and were also voted one of the UK’s top 500 business brands by the UK Superbrands Council.
Revolutionary Speciality Plasterboards: Engineering Excellence for Modern Challenges
British Gypsum's speciality board range represents the pinnacle of plasterboard technology, each engineered to address specific construction challenges:
Gyproc Habito Board
The Gyproc Habito board features enhanced anchoring properties, allowing for heavy fixtures to be fixed to walls such as bannisters, or even large televisions without the need for specialist raw plugs and drills.
This board can hold up to 15kg, which is especially advantageous to sectors such as healthcare, which regularly have heavy machinery wall-mounted. Previously, there would have to be plywood installed behind the board for this to be possible, but Gyproc Habito is robust enough to eliminate the need altogether.
Gyproc Duraline Board
The Gyproc Duraline board has a high-density core with fire-resistant additives, allowing it to resist high impact whilst improving fire resistance and overall safety. Thanks to it being a double-layer solution, noise is also reduced, making Gyproc Duraline an ideal choice for areas with high foot traffic, such as walkways.
Glasroc Board
Glasroc is a glass-reinforced plasterboard that offers high moisture resistance, fire resistance and impact protection. Its construction is robust and durable, making it a great choice for heavy bathroom tiles that traditional boards wouldn’t be able to hold.
The Glasroc family includes specialised solutions for different applications:
- Glasroc F FireCase 15mm – Designed to protect the structure from fire damage
- Glasroc H TileBacker 12.5mm – Engineered to protect the structure from moisture damage
Glasroc X Sheathing Board
Glasroc X Sheathing Board is a lightweight, glass fibre reinforced specialist plasterboard. It can be used to provide structural steel frame buildings with temporary weather protection for up to six months.
This board allows our partners to protect their steel frame projects from the elements before the fit-out begins, providing crucial protection during the vulnerable construction phase.
Fully Recyclable Boards
British Gypsum has recently unveiled the revolutionary Gyproc Soundbloc Infinaé 100. This innovative new plasterboard provides the construction industry with the very first UK-manufactured plasterboard made from 100% rec
cled gypsum. The Gyproc Soundbloc Infinaé 100 sets a new benchmark for sustainable construction and is a testament to British Gypsum’s commitment to the circular economy and dedication to shaping a more sustainable future for the construction industry.
