From manufacturing to industry

mirror production begins

A prosperous period of development

18th century

Benefiting from its origins from royal orders, the Manufacture des Glaces took advantage above all of the enthusiasm of individuals for mirrors which were becoming commonplace and of its manufacturing monopoly to establish its prosperity.

The evolution of the glass market

19th century

Faced with the emergence of strong international competition, Saint-Gobain is developing a significant chemical activity which supports the expansion of ice cream factories outside the borders of France. Glass is becoming a construction material in its own right with the development of an architecture combining iron and glass for large public facilities such as stations, exhibition halls, greenhouses, halls, covered passages and department stores.

Industrial revolutions and modern times

20th century

The 20th century is one of diversification: manufacturing ice almost exclusively since its origins, Saint-Gobain is now interested in all types of glass products.
