Introduction:

We collaborated with McAlpine Joint Venture and Cole Nicholas Grimshaw to design a visually appealing yet practical ceiling for the Eden Project's central core space, which connects the center's unique geodesic Biomes.

Problem:

The Eden Project trusted us to offer a high-performance acoustic ceiling to assist create a peaceful environment in the multi-functional core area, which blends restaurant and study space. With the project planned to draw over a million national and international visitors each year, it was critical that the area reflected the best of British design while utilizing the appropriate components in the right way to ensure durability and minimal maintenance.

Solution:

The answer was a high-performance ceiling made of British Gypsum Gyptone Line 6 boards that were attached to a curved Gypframe metal framework and joined together to achieve a monolithic finish. The perforated line design of the acoustic tissue-backed boards created a visually appealing ceiling that blended aesthetics with great acoustics to create the ideal environment for the main area. It was critical that the products utilized were strong, durable, and low-maintenance so that they could last the test of time.

Benefits:

The project was revisited four years after its first debut, when the center had received over five million visitors, and the ceiling look was as excellent as when it was initially placed.

Working with McAlpine Joint Venture and Cole Nicholas Grimshaw, we were able to offer an innovative and long-lasting solution with a high-quality finish that left a good impact at The Eden Project.
