Factory by day, indie rockstars by night

By day, Quality Control Technician George Lyons meticulously examines components on the assembly line at High Performance Ceramics in Rainford with a keen eye. His colleague and “partner in crime” Rob Davies, a Cast Operative, tests ceramics pieces nearby.

Come nightfall, George transforms into the frontman and lead singer of their indie pop quintet, Apostles. Rob, rhythm guitarist, downs tools and joins him.  

Hailing from Wigan, the duo who first met at West Lancashire College more than 10 years ago, diligently co-ordinate their shifts to fit around gigs. Support from colleagues has been unwavering.

“We are so lucky to have supportive colleagues and managers who fully back us – they’ve even been to our gigs,” smiles 29-year-old George, who was starstruck after meeting Tom Clarke, frontman of indie rock band The Enemy.

Despite the allure of stardom and nudging shoulders with some of their idols, the pair remain firmly grounded, balancing their ordinary day jobs at Saint-Gobain with music dreams.

The self-taught musicians who describe their sound as “jingly-jangly indie pop” cite Oasis, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Blossoms as influences.

Alongside their other band mates - James Brown (drums), Ian Morris (bass), and Joe Smith on lead guitar – they have already made their mark at the Isle of Wight festival with more gigs on the horizon.

As for the future, it’s certainly looking bright for the indie rockers, whose catchy riffs, and nostalgic lyrics, are a perky soundtrack to the summer.

“We know it’s a tough industry,” admits 28-year-old Rob, “but we are realistic, and we set ourselves small goals like avoiding festival sunburn and equipment mishaps!”

With dreams of meeting, and even sharing a stage with the likes of Liam Gallagher, these integral cogs at Rainford return to the factory floor which remains their foundation. For now...
